The film’s title is a double entendre. It refers to the genetic lineage of the family’s curse, but also to the hereditary nature of mental illness and trauma. As Annie sinks deeper into her grief, the audience is forced to question what is supernatural and what is a psychological break. This ambiguity is what elevates the film to the "top" of the genre; it respects the audience's intelligence by refusing to spoon-feed answers until the devastating finale.
